My boyfriend and I were taking one of our very romantic strolls through the aisles of Sephora when we stumbled upon the Herbivore Blue Tansy Mask (CAD $60). Prior to seeing this on the shelves, I had heard very little about this product. We are both major mask junkies, so we decided to pick this one up to give it a try. If you want to know its effects on our skin (yes, my boyfriend will be giving his own mini review for all the men out there!), just keep on reading!
The Herbivore Blue Tansy mask claims to "gently exfoliate, smooth, and resurface the skin" through its ingredients of white willow bark, fruit enzymes, and blue tansy.
A breakdown of the ingredients and its functions, taken from its Sephora page, are as follows:
This product is vegan, noncomedogenic, cruelty-free, and formulated without gluten and silicone.
The Herbivore Blue Tansy is in a circular glass jar, quite heavy on the hand. The plastic white lid secures the jar very nicely. I've carried this mask around in bags, and nothing has ever leaked out of the container.
A thin plastic spatula comes with the mask, which I very much appreciate as dipping my fingers into the jar to get product out is just not very sanitary.
The Herbivore Blue Tansy mask is the most stunning shade of blue in the jar. When applied to the face, there is a hint of blue as well. The mask has a gel-like consistency. It also has a very strong smell which I'm personally not a fan of. The best I can describe the scent is that it smells sort of spicy, but also a little too heavily refreshing - it really hit me the first time I smelled it.
When initially applied to the skin, there is a quick cooling effect. Then the tingling starts and lasts for about 30 - 60 seconds. My boyfriend, Phil, has extremely sensitive skin, so the tingling actually felt like burning to him. As for me, my skin is mildly sensitive, but the most intense tingling sensation did hurt my skin a bit as well. After the tingling sensations passed, the gel felt super refreshing. We left the mask on for 20 minutes, as instructed, and it had dried down to a tight plastic-like texture (it reminded us of a peel-off mask).
We used warm water to wash the mask off, but we had a very difficult time doing so. Once wet, it felt slimy and clung onto our skins. The instructions recommend using a towel to wipe off the mask, but we didn't have a towel near us so we just kept trying to rinse off the mask. Both of us could definitely feel the immediate effects of the mask. Phil has combination-oily skin with quite a bit of texture, and right after washing the mask off, his nose (the area with the most texture) felt decongested and smooth. He also noted how refreshed his skin felt. As for me, I have combination skin, and my skin also felt very smooth. However, the most impressive effect was noticed the next morning when my skin looked a lot brighter - the hyperpigmentation from blemish scars had noticeably faded. I was very surprised by how quick the mask had taken effect.
We used this mask for four consecutive days, then every other day for a week, as instructed. We have really noticed a difference in our skin. Both our faces feel a lot smoother and brighter. The slight inflammation caused by blemishes that Phil has has also been noticeably toned down. One trick we learned that made our lives a lot easier is to use a konjac sponge to remove the mask. Simply wet the sponge and wipe the face with it - it easily removes the mask with no filmy residue.
I would highly recommend this mask to those who are looking for a great resurfacing mask and aren't afraid to splurge on skincare. I would take caution when using this mask if you have very sensitive skin as the tingling sensation may feel painful. As noted before, the smell is a little too strong for my liking, but the great immediate and long-term effects of this mask definitely negate my dislike for the scent.
