I seriously cannot believe 2017 is over - where does the time go? One year ago, I started my beauty Instagram to share my passion for makeup with everyone. To this day, I still cannot believe the growth that continues to occur on my account. I've met some really awesome people and have seen so many beautiful and inspiring pictures created by super hardworking and amazing people! My New Year's resolution is to be more present on my blog and to reply to my Instagram comments in a more timely manner (I'm not the best at replying to everyone's comments, but I do see and appreciate them very much!)
I've split my Best of 2017 into three posts because I just have so many products that I loved in the year of 2017. I'll be talking about these products in the order I apply them to my face. So without further ado, let's get started on all the face products I've been loving for the past year!
BENEFIT THE POREFESSIONAL FACE PRIMER (CAD $42)
The Porefessional has been a favourite of mine ever since I started wearing makeup. It does a great job at filling in my pores and smoothing out the skin. The downside is that I've watched the price for this continue to increase over the years, and it is now a whopping $42 for less than 1 oz.
PHILOSOPHY THE PRESENT INVISIBLE SKIN PERFECTOR & OIL-FREE MAKEUP PRIMER (CAD $36)
The Present is a thicker moisturizing primer that does an excellent job at smoothing out the entire complexion. It has a tacky finish, which really helps my foundation stick onto my face. I've noticed a huge difference in the longevity of my makeup when I use this primer.
TOUCH IN SOL NO POREBLEM PRIMER (CAD $23)
Another amazing pore-filling primer for half the price of the Benefit Porefessional. I discovered the No Poreblem primer this year, and it has quickly become one of my favourites. It's much more lightweight than the Porefessional in my opinion (it feels thinner and less silicone-y).
SMASHBOX PHOTO FINISH PRIMER WATER (CAD $39)
I LOVE this primer water because of its moisturizing properties. Whenever I feel extra dry, I give my face a few spritz of this and my skin literally feels plumper. It also has a very slight tacky finish when it's dried, which helps to hold onto my makeup.
GLOSSIER PRIMING MOISTURIZER (CAD $27)
This, like the Philosophy The Present primer, is a very moisturizing primer. It has a thinner consistency than the Philosophy primer, but it does not have The Present's skin smoothing properties. However, it dries down quite tacky, which again grips onto my foundation to prevent fading throughout the day.
FENTY BEAUTY BY RIHANNA PRO FILT'R SOFT MATTE LONGWEAR FOUNDATION (CAD $42)
The Fenty foundation is the best foundation I've tried that came out this year! It keeps me matte all day long, but doesn't look heavy, cakey, or dull - there's a very slight soft glow that comes with applying this foundation. When my skin is feeling more dry, I like to mix a few drops of beauty oil with this foundation to sheer it out just a bit so that it won't cling onto any dry spots.
MISSHA M PERFECT COVER BB CREAM* (CAD $18.25) + GLOSSIER PERFECTING SKIN TINT (CAD $32)
This combo has been my go-to for the cooler months this year. Alone, I'm not a huge fan of either products, but together, they create such a glowy and dewy complexion. However, this combo does require me to generously set my entire face with powder or else it'll start to melt off during the day since I do have combo-oily skin.
TARTE RAINFOREST OF THE SEA WATER FOUNDATION (CAD $51)
Another amazing lightweight and dewy foundation. This offers a light-medium coverage that is absolutely buildable. I love how moisturizing, but non-oily this foundation is. Setting it with a light layer of powder makes it last all day with minimal need for me to touch up my t-zone.
L'OREAL TRUE MATCH LUMI CUSHION FOUNDATION* (CAD $19.97)
The only drugstore foundation that I was impressed with is this L'oreal Cushion foundation. I love how dewy it is and how easy it is to apply to the face (just press your brush or sponge into the cushion to pick up product). This foundation is extremely full coverage and a little goes a long way, so it's definitely worth the penny!
URBAN DECAY NAKED SKIN WEIGHTLESS COMPLETE COVERAGE CONCEALER (CAD $35)
I LOVE how lightweight but full-coverage this concealer is. UD did such an amazing job at creating this concealer. It's super easy to blend but the coverage absolutely does not sheer out. It lasts the whole day without creasing and settling into any fine lines (of course, I do set it with a powder).
TARTE SHAPE TAPE CONTOUR CONCEALER (CAD $35)
Holy guacomole, Tarte literally created the highest coverage concealer I have ever used in my life. A little definitely does a go a long way with this. The weirdest, but greatest thing about the Shape Tape is that even though it's so thick, it blends so easily and flawlessly into the skin without settling into fine lines or being too cakey. If you're interested in a full review on this, you can find it here.
TOO FACED BORN THIS WAY NATURALLY RADIANT CONCEALER ($32)
This is a more sheer-medium concealer that's very moisturizing. I typically use this when I'm feeling extra dry on the undereyes because the texture and consistency feels soothing to the skin. This does have a filmy consistency, so it's definitely a must to set it with some powder.
BARE MINERALS BAREPRO PERFORMANCE WEAR POWDER FOUNDATION (CAD $37)
I've never used a ton of Bare Minerals products, but after watching Desi Perkins rave about this powder, I decided to pick it up and give it a whirl. I'm typically not a powder foundation type of gal cause it tends to look too cakey, but this powder is not heavy whatsoever. It blends so flawlessly into the skin and sets my foundation beautifully. I see a huge difference in the longevity of my base makeup and the light coverage it offers on top of my liquid products is a great bonus.
MARCELLE FACE POWDER (CAD $15.95)
Another great drugstore find! The Marcelle loose powder sets my makeup super flawlessly - it's not cakey or heavy and does not give my face a white cast like some translucent powders do. The best part is, you get SO much product for such an inexpensive price.
TARTE TARTEIST CONTOUR PALETTE (CAD $35)
I mainly used this palette for the two highlighting and brightening powders. I love how smooth and flawless they make my undereyes without making them look too dry or crepe-y. The contour shades are also beautiful on my medium neutral skintone. Sadly, I believe Tarte doesn't sell this palette anymore. I hope they do come out with these shades in individual pans though!
ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS CONTOUR KIT (CAD $52)
Again, I mainly used this palette for the two brightening powders. These are very similar to the Tarte ones, just slightly harder. However, the compactness of these powders does not affect their quality - these are still very smooth, do not cake up, and make my undereyes look flawless. I reach for these when I'm putting on a full-coverage glam face on as these powders have amazing brightening properties - the Tarte powders are much more natural compared to these ones.
BENEFIT COSMETICS HOOLA MATTE BRONZER (CAD $38)
This is very well-loved in my collection as you can see from the pan (it's a miracle when I hit pan on any product because I try to switch up the products I use everyday). This is a beautiful contour shade for light-medium skintone - it's not too orange or muddy, and it's not too pigmented that it creates a prominent stripe of bronzer on your cheeks. Although it's light in pigment, it's very buildable, so if you're looking for a stronger contour, you can layer this powder to increase its pigmentation.
MAC MINERALIZE SKINFINISH NATURAL IN GIVE ME SUN! (CAD $38)
A beautiful bronzer for the summertime when I'm more tanned. It has an orange, terracotta undertone, so I would not recommend this if you are very fair. For anyone who has a medium-dark skintone, this will give your face a beautiful and glowy sunkissed bronze.
PHYSICIANS FORMULA BUTTER BRONZER* (CAD $19.35)
This is an amazing drugstore bronzer that I like to turn to when I'm more pale (like right now since it's winter and we basically get no sun in Canada). It gives such a beautiful bronze to the skin while still being very blendable, but not too buildable. If you're fair and looking for a great drugstore bronzer that smells like tropical heaven, I'd give this one a go.
MILANI BAKED BLUSH IN LUMINOSO (CAD $14.99)
I introduced myself to this blush in the summer of 2017 (I know it's super late, but I literally found this blush in my local grocery store at that time). I've heard so many people rave about this blush throughout the years, and I finally know why. It's INSANELY beautiful on the cheeks - a flush of coral with the most stunning shimmer (not sparkly, but glowy). This is the perfect blush for the spring and summer, and it looks absolutely gorgeous on tanned skin!
TARTE AMAZONIAN CLAY 12-HOUR BLUSH IN EXPOSED (CAD $38)
I've been loving this blush since 2015, when I first got it. This is the perfect natural plummy mauve shade for every single look you can imagine. It gives your cheeks the most beautiful flush that's not too rosy and pink. I'd highly recommend this blush to anyone and everyone, especially if you're just starting your makeup collection.
BENEFIT COSMETICS CORALISTA BOX O' POWDER BLUSH (CAD $38)
This again, is a gorgeous coral blush (can you tell I have a trend with my blushes?) It has a slight golden glisten under the sun and gives a subtle sheen to the cheeks. This is a more subtle coral compared to Milani Luminoso and is absolutely beautiful on both pale and tanned skin.
CLINIQUE CHEEK POP IN NUDE POP (CAD $29)
This blush adds a gorgeous pink sheen to the cheeks, giving them a very glowy and luminous flush. I also have Peach Pop, which is a stunning coral, but I definitely reach for Nude Pop much more often because of the gorgeous pinky glow it has.
BECCA SHIMMERING SKIN PERFECTOR PRESSED HIGHLIGHTER IN CHAMPAGNE POP (CAD $46)
It's Becca, it's Jaclyn Hill, what's not to love right? This highlight is SO blinding without being chunky or glittery. I love using this highlight whenever I'm wearing warm shadows cause the peachy-golden undertone of Champagne Pop goes perfectly with warm tones of the eye. I also love mixing a little of Champagne Pop into whatever other highlight I'm wearing that day just cause I love it.
BECCA SHIMMERING SKIN PERFECTOR PRESSED HIGHLIGHTER IN OPAL (CAD $46)
Another Becca highlighter, are you surprised? Opal has a cooler undertone compared to Champagne Pop, so I like to apply this when I'm wearing cool-toned eyeshadows. Again, this is SUPER blinding, but not chunky or glittery, which is what I look for in a highlighter.
ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS AURORA GLOW KIT (CAD $52)
2017 was a year of holographic highlighters for me. I love the range of holo shades in the Aurora palette - I definitely reached for the more unconventional shades in the summer to add a fun pop of colour on my cheekbones. Again, super duper blinding without being chunky, and it lasts on the skin for so long without me having to spray Mac Fix + on it prior to application.
COLOURPOP GIMME MORE! HIGHLIGHTER PALETTE (USD $18)
Definitely a highlight palette I'd recommend to those just starting out on their makeup journey. It's inexpensive, and you get six beautiful highlighters for skintones ranging from fair to quite tanned. I have to say, they definitely aren't as smooth and buttery as the ABH or Becca highlighters, but for its price, it is quite high in quality.
BENEFIT COSMETICS HIGH BEAM LIQUID FACE HIGHLIGHTER (CAD $35)
My favourite liquid highlighter of ALL TIME! I literally use this underneath my powder highlights every single day for three months straight. I would say this highlighter is comparable to liquid pearl (at least how I imagine liquid pearl would be like if I see it). It's super blendable without breaking up my other liquid products on the face. It gives a beautiful sheen to the skin and helps intensify the powder highlight I apply on top.
URBAN DECAY ALL NIGHTER LONG-LASTING MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY (CAD $40)
My holy grail setting spray is the All Nighter by Urban Decay. I will probably use this for the rest of my life, seeing how great this is. This helps the powders on my face melt into the liquid products, creating a more flawless complexion. More importantly, this setting spray really does help my makeup last much longer. I've tested the effectiveness of this by only spraying half my face. By the end of a 12-hour day, there was barely any fading on the side that I had set while almost all the makeup on the other side of my face had faded.
MAC COSMETICS PREP + PRIME FIX + (CAD $30)
This is seriously a staple in my collection because it serves so many different purposes. I like to spray this all over my face before I put on makeup when my skin is feeling especially dry (like right now). I also sometimes spray this after I put on my makeup to help the powders sink into my skin and give it an overall luminous glow. This in no way helps my makeup last longer, so I wouldn't consider this a setting spray, but I do like to combine this with the UD one to add that extra sheen to my skin. Lastly, but most importantly, I use Fix + to wet any shimmer shadows I apply to the lids. It converts the shadow to an intense and much more pigmented shimmer and helps it stick to the lids, reducing the amount of fallout.
If you are still reading, I applaud you! This was such a fun post to create for you all, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking about why I love each product so much. I'd love to know what your favourite face products of 2017 were, so let me know down in the comments!
